The first Presbyterian worship services in Montague, were held in the Temperance Hall from 1874 until the time that their first Church building was completed and dedicated in 1876. These were the early beginnings of St. Andrew’s which, as a church, continued to grow and flourish until suffering a major setback in 1925.
This is when the United Church of Canada was formed and throughout the entire country of Canada, every Presbyterian church took a vote to see if they would remain Presbyterian or become United church. Majority vote either way, would be entitled to keep the church building while the minority would be looking for a new place to worship.
In Montague, the decision came down to one single vote. Still, with that majority of one, the original Presbyterian church building became the property of the United Church of Canada while the Presbyterian congregation began looking for a new place to worship.
In 1927, St. Andrew’s was given the current building they now worship in. This building was built in 1888 as a Methodist church and was gratefully received by the congregation of St. Andrew‘s. The building was then moved back from the street and placed upon a concrete foundation and basement. The congregation continued to grow and flourish once again.
In the 1960’s, it became necessary to remove the steeple as time had taken it’s toll upon it. The church hall was added on during the 1970's.
St. Andrew's is currently a vibrant growing church that is eager to reach out to and serve in the community of
Montague. It is a congregation in which the love of God is plainly demonstrated as it's people support, encourage and strengthen one another. The fellowship enjoyed by all is truly wonderful!
